SC Directs NMC to Frame a Scheme for Ukraine Returned Medical Students

The measures taken by the Supreme Court to help Ukraine returned Medical Students by accommodating them in India's Private Medical Institutes to complete their medical degrees that had been hampered during the Ukraine crisis and their return in the Pandemic.

The NMC highlights

No norms under the NMC Regulations to accommodate Indian students studying medical courses abroad.
The students must be eligible for provisional registration as a professional under the Indian Medical Council Act to complete a one-year Internship.
Clinical training cannot be imparted through online mode as it is meant to be on-field training.
Now, Ukraine returned medical students have a ray of hope, as NMC Sought Health Ministry's View Over Supreme Court Direction To Help MBBS Students Hit By Ukraine Crisis and the Pandemic.
After the intervention of the External Affairs Ministry, the decision came under the limelight after they wrote a letter to the Health Ministry requesting them to consider admitting students to India’s Private Medical Institutes.
The action was made due to the education of medical students which should not be hindered and they could continue their education in India.

On April 29th, the Supreme Court issued the following directions “to ease the pandemic-related problems faced by students with foreign medical degrees by adding that the Indian students have no corresponding obligation that they must complete their education in the same country.”

NMC should frame a scheme as a one-time exception in a period of two months.
NMC must analyse or test the candidate satisfactorily before provisional registration to complete an internship of 12 months.

"Taking into consideration the order dated April 29 passed by the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Health is requested to kindly offer its views/comments on the issue of providing clinical training to foreign medical graduates in India," the NMC Secretary said.
