To impart education to the financially challenged boys, Central Philippine University was founded as the Jaro Industrial School by missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, in the year 1905.
The university changed its name to Central Philippine College in 1923 when it opened its junior college program. CPU received its university status in 1953.
